By words I would sing your story, Oh, Shambhu. Because I am unsuited for the hard methods of Yoga, And I would worship thee with my mind, oh , Easwara, And also I would bow before you with my head.

Weekend with Wisdom: Bhakti in Advaita Vedanta

Contrary to the charges of other theistic Vedāntins like Rāmānuja, Madhva, Vallabha, etc. against the Advaitins that the latter’s basic principles cannot accord any place to devotion or
a personal Godhead; we find a reference to worship (upāsanā), devotion, etc. not only in the Ṛg Veda which bears the earliest testimony of Advaitic thought but also in the works of
Śaṃkara and many of his followers like Sureśvara, Sarvajñātman, Vidyāraṇya, Madhusūdana Sarasvatī, Brahmānanda Sarasvatī, Nārāyaṇa Tīrtha, etc.

In this talk, Dr. Niranjan Saha will shed light on this debate, with special reference to Madhusūdana Sarasvatī (ca. 16th century CE), an uncompromising defender of Śaṃkara’s non-dualistic (Advaita) Vedānta and a foremost advocate of the inclusion of devotion within the Advaita system.
